First 24 Hours After Surgery

The first day is the most important for recovery. Your body is beginning the healing process, and following these guidelines will set you up for the best outcome.

Do:

  • Bite on gauze for 30-60 minutes
  • Apply ice packs (20 min on/off)
  • Rest with head elevated
  • Take prescribed medications
  • Drink cool water frequently

Don't:

  • Spit, rinse vigorously, or use a straw
  • Smoke or use tobacco
  • Eat hot, spicy, or hard foods
  • Touch the surgical site
  • Exercise or lift heavy objects

Days 2-7: Early Recovery

Swelling typically peaks at 48-72 hours then gradually subsides. You may notice minor bruising which is normal and will resolve within a week.

  • Begin gentle salt water rinses (1/2 tsp salt in warm water) after 24 hours
  • Eat soft, nutritious foods: yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies, soup
  • Take pain medication as directed. don't wait for pain to become severe
  • Brush other teeth normally, avoiding the surgical site
  • Continue ice packs as needed for the first 48 hours

Weeks 2-4: Healing Phase

Most discomfort resolves by week two. You can gradually return to your normal diet, avoiding very hard or crunchy foods directly on the implant side. The gum tissue continues healing and the implant begins integrating with your jawbone. a process called osseointegration.
