Root Canal Recovery Guide

Immediately After Your Root Canal

Your tooth and surrounding area will be numb for 2-4 hours after the procedure. Avoid eating until the numbness wears off completely to prevent accidentally biting your cheek or tongue. A temporary filling or crown has been placed. avoid chewing on that side until your permanent restoration is complete.

Managing Pain and Discomfort

Some tenderness is normal for 3-5 days after a root canal. Here's how to manage it:

  • Take over-the-counter pain medication (ibuprofen or acetaminophen) as directed
  • Take medication before the anesthesia wears off for best results
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek if needed
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night
  • Avoid touching or pressing on the treated tooth

Eating After Root Canal

Good Choices:

  • Yogurt and soft cheese
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Soup and broth
  • Smoothies and protein shakes
  • Pasta and soft bread

Avoid Until Healed:

  • Hard, crunchy foods (nuts, chips)
  • Sticky foods (caramel, gum)
  • Very hot or very cold items
  • Chewing on the treated side
  • Alcohol for the first 24 hours

Oral Hygiene During Recovery

Continue brushing and flossing normally, being gentle around the treated tooth. Good oral hygiene supports healing and prevents infection. Rinse with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in a glass of warm water) 2-3 times daily for the first few days.

Follow-Up: Getting Your Permanent Crown

A root canal-treated tooth needs a permanent crown for protection. Your temporary filling is not designed to last long-term. Schedule your crown appointment within 2-4 weeks to prevent:

  • The treated tooth fracturing
  • Reinfection through the temporary filling
  • The tooth weakening over time
